For these Demeter certified bars, Chocolatemakers works together with Brazilian cocoa farmers in the paradisiacal Bahia region on the Brazilian east coast. Bahia is an area where nature and rainforests are still in a beautiful original state. With trees that are sometimes hundreds of years old and a biodiversity that we see in few places in the world.

On Brazilian bars it says Demeter. A logo that is not yet known to everyone, so we will explain it. Demeter products are organic anyway, but Demeter certifies biodynamic farms and products. Biodynamic goes one step further than organic. It is a holistic way of agriculture in which ecosystems are not disrupted and we do not just take and extract from the soil, but feed the soil with manure and other natural substances so that the soil remains healthy for many years to come.

The Demeter farmers in the region are affiliated with the Cabruca cooperative. Cabruca is also the name of the local cultivation system in which there is no need to deforest the land, as the cocoa trees grow well in the shade of other native trees in the Atlantic ecosystem and coexist with a wide variety of other plant and animal species. This method, which has been used in the region for more than 200 years, is a model that has inspired other agroforestry systems around the world.

Chocolatemakers works directly with one of the Cabruca farms, namely the Fazenda Bom Jesus. Founded in 1997 by a Swiss and his Brazilian wife who were already living in the region at the time. There are now 15 people working on the farm and palm, guarana, acai and vanilla are also grown.

The holistic approach and focus on the health of the soil and ecosystem means that the cocoa grows under perfect conditions. Something that will definitely come back in the taste of the chocolate later on.
